We publish opinion and information on European best practice via eg magazine

Global to Local has project development and management experience with environmental projects of all sizes at both national and international level.

We have experience, much of which gained in local government, in Environmental Planning, Town Planning, Landscape Design and
Parks Management.

Climate Change Resilience

We provide practical advice and tools for organisations to future-proof their operations against the predicted effects of climate change.

We explore with organisations what sustainability means to them and how to build self-reliance.

We can assist in new ways of working across organisations, teams, sectors and partnerships.

Through better spatial planning and more effective management of green and blue infrastructure, communities can be made more climate resilient.

“During periods of high temperatures residents of urban areas will suffer significantly. This is because buildings store heat and contribute to the urban heat island (UHI) effect.3 This can result in temperature differences of up to 7°C between centres of large conurbations such as London and their surrounding rural areas.”
(R.L. Wilby: ‘Past and projected trends in London’s urban heat island’. Weather, 2003, Vol. 58, 251-260)

“Regional and local spatial planning and urban design can provide solutions that will make our communities less vulnerable to these risks. Green infrastructure such as gardens, parks, productive landscapes, green corridors, and green roofs and walls, and blue infrastructure such as water bodies, rivers, streams, floodplains and sustainable drainage systems, play a vital role in creating climate-resilient development.” (R. Shaw, M. Colley and R. Connell: Climate Change Adaptation by Design: A Guide for Sustainable Communities. TCPA, 2007. www.tcpa.org.uk)

Example projects:

NI188 Review
Global to Local has undertaken an NI188 Review of LCLIP and Risk Registers to identify Risks and Opportunities relevant to the Local Area Agreement for Gloucestershire County Council and Stroud District Council.

Hastings BC -Climate Change Adaptation
HBC is a partner in a European climate change adaptation project funded by Interreg IVB (ERDF, North West Europe) and through the project  is to create an ‘adaptation plus’  strategy and action plan, that is multi-disciplinary in its scope, and incorporates evidence locally as well as delivering imaginative responses and best practice throughout the UK and Europe.

Global to Local is providing support to develop an ‘adaptation plus’ strategy and action plan and to work with Hastings Borough Council to engage the LSP, relevant organisations and local authority departments to identify climate risk and share in developing solutions and key actions to be taken.

LB Sutton - Green and Blue Corridors
The London Borough of Sutton commissioned Global to Local in summer 2010 to produce a study on the impact of blue and green corridors on climate change adaptation. This looked at a variety of land forms and waterway types designed to ameliorate the effects of global warming, and in particular to reduce the impact of high peak urban summer temperatures. This was well received as part of a stakeholder consultation exercise by key figures in Government, including representatives of the Environment Agency, water companies and CABE.
